The band will be playing select tour dates in North America, UK, Ireland and Europe where they’ll perform the album in it’s entirely. “Some Loud Thunder” has been remastered by TW Walsh and will be available on vinyl for the first time in several years.

BUY: Some Loud Thunder

A few words about the album from CYHSY’s Alec Ounsworth.

Let me explain.
Some Loud Thunder was an album written mostly as a reaction to the not unwelcome but still uncomfortable great interest in the band’s first album, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.  Depending on who you asked, in 2007 the band was known alternatively as the “real thing” or a flash in the pan, a band who presented a new paradigm for independent music or whose model was based on sheer luck, a band simply enjoying the process of creation or a (relatively) new band struggling to maintain some sort of illusory artistic foothold.

The general desire to discover the “secret” behind the project (and the irritation that it caused me in interviews, reviews, etc.) was, to a large degree, what drove the creation of the album, Some Loud Thunder.  Mostly, this is evidenced in the songs, Some Loud Thunder (“Yes, that was me breaking glass and pretending to start something big, some new taste”) and Satan Said Dance (“Satan” here as the transitory faction of an audience which tends to disappear as soon as any chances are taken), but in others as well.

I think that this album, from the abrasive first track (which was not as much of a fuck you as some think but rather that it simply worked) to the final disintegrating “give up give up give up give up give up” on the song, “Five Easy Pieces,” documents a band that was comfortable taking big chances, somewhat aware of the consequences of taking chances (in an industry that often seems allergic to veering off the beaten path) but ignoring them all the same.  For this, maybe most of all, I am very proud of this album.  For true fans, who allow the opportunity to take such chances and are not afraid to embrace what may at first seem difficult or different, I am eternally grateful.

A note from Alec about cancelled shows…

Hi all,

I wanted to write to you regarding the recent cancellation of shows due to illness.  Several months ago, I contracted Lyme disease and likely meningitis.  As it was left undiagnosed until recently, it had become relatively serious.  Among other more nagging symptoms (headache, nausea, lethargy, joint pains, etc.), I have had two rounds of high fever in the last month which left me bedridden for more than a week.

I am not one to cancel shows easily (before this stretch, I missed a total of 2 shows in 12 years due to illness) which is why I wanted to reach out directly and apologize for missing out on 9 recent shows which I had no choice but to reluctantly let go.

On a positive note, now that my illness has been correctly diagnosed, I am on the right medication and have been the mend.  It has been recommended that I rest as much as possible at the moment but I will likely be back to normal by early August.

As always, thanks for your support and I hope to see you soon.

Living Room Tour / June + July 2017

June 17 – NYC or Brooklyn – SOLD OUT
June 18 – Southbury CT – SOLD OUT
June 19 – Providence RI – SOLD OUT
June 21 – Boston MA – SOLD OUT
June 22 – Williamstown MA – CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS
June 23 – Stanfordville NY – CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS
June 24 – Burlington VT – CANCELLED DUE TO ILLNESS

We’re putting together Alec solo living shows in June and July. These are all acoustic shows with no stage or sound system. Please ready everything below and get in touch if you live in or near these towns and want to host a show. We’d love to have a show in your living room!

We’ll make this as easy as possible for the hosts. All you have to do is let us borrow your living room for about 3 hours, check names off the list at the door… in return you’ll get 5 additional free tickets for friends and our eternal gratitude.

1. Please read everything below so you know how it works.

2. email this info:
– a. Your address.
– b. A few photos of your living room.
– c. Please put “CYHSY Living Room Show” and the name of your city in the subject line.

3. Sit tight and we’ll get back to as soon as possible if we can book the show at your place.

Here’s how it works.

1. You have a house, loft, small gallery, studio or other intimate space where we can do a private show that can comfortably and safely host 40-75 people. There needs to be street parking, parking garage or public transportation nearby and your neighbors should be cool. It would be a huge bummer if someone called the cops because of all the extra cars and people coming to your house. You probably shouldn’t do this if you live in a small apartment with a bunch of uptight neighbors or a cranky landlord. Be realistic on how many people your place can hold. We need to know how many tickets we can sell in advance. Sorry, we can’t do these shows outside.

2. Ticket price will be $20. Everyone must buy tickets in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door. There will be no reselling or third-party tickets sales. All tickets sales are direct to fans from Undertow. Limit 4 tickets per person. These shows sell out quickly and we want everyone to have a fair opportunity to buy tickets.

3. We’ll provide the host with a list of everyone coming to the show. The host won’t have to deal with any money and will only need to check people off the list as they arrive. We ask guests to arrive between 7:00-7:45pm. The shows start at 8pm and we ask everyone to be out of your space by 10pm.

4. The host gets 5 additional free tickets for the show. If you have other friends beyond your 5 guests who want to come to the show you should direct them buy tickets on-line.

5. Your home address will not be published on the web and will only be given to people who purchase tickets.

6. The shows will promoted on our websites, Facebook and Twitter and word-of-mouth.

7. We’ll need your help to spread the word on your Facebook and Twitter too. We’ll create a Facebook event for each show and make you a host of the event so you can easily invite your friends (Thank you!). Remember, please don’t post your address. The address only goes to people after they buy tickets. We need to keep the location private so random people don’t try to show up and pay at the door.

8. You don’t need any sort of sound system. All you need is an armless chair for Alec to sit on and some kind of ambient lighting like a lamp on coffee table, floor lamp, or overhead lights with a dimmer to help create a cozy mood.

9. You don’t need seating for everyone. If you have a bunch of chairs, great! But most shows are floor seating and we let guests know they should bring a cushion or pillow to sit on during the show.

10. There will be no opening acts on the living room shows.

11. We love dogs and cats… we really do! But an excitable pet running around during the show can be distracting for the guests and performers. If you have curious and friendly 4-legged family members, would you be ok with putting them in another part of the house or sending them to a friend’s house during the show?

That’s it.

Untitled (Ritual)

Here is an older song that I felt inspired to quickly record a few hours ago (lyrics and link below) . . . It is more or less about dangers of provincialism (American, in this case). For what it’s worth . . .

Untitled (Ritual)

With the hail that sounds stiffly
On this fragile, old mountain
A Mexican ritual like coins in a fountain
And I’m apologizing, apologizing for being here

North of Teotihuacan, Temple Moon and Sun
Would sit immigrant flower protecting what’s left
Of his dangerous hipness,
his unshakable disbelief

But a candle, it is lit
With the fire from the spit
While the Americans all go running naked around a tree
There’s nothing stranger than what’s here
And I’m in danger, I fear,
Of the world becoming a little too weird for me

I could call upon New York, could call upon London
Digesting peyote with a stomach all shrunk
Like an ambassador humming to a native drum drumming

Or like a crazy, dead elephant who didn’t trust the water
I’m thinking of ways now to forget the slaughter
For truth holds the hand of a foreign land
But an American don’t need no more company

Fast approaching opinion
On the runway a plane lands
And lets off a herd, which desires destination
But goes jumping from stone to stone to stone to tree

And when home across the border, this fast food reporter
writes words like a vampire
And he slurs for a short while
And he sums it all up, it’s the meat from the pup that’s intriguing

And a candle, it is lit
With the fire from the spit
While the Americans all go running naked around a tree
There’s nothing stranger than what’s here
And I’m in danger, I fear,
Of the world becoming a little too weird for me
